What's the Difference Between BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers?Injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers offer unique benefits to reduce lines and wrinkles in the face. However, these injectable products provide different results and address specific signs of aging, among other skin issues. The main difference between BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers is the way in which they work to reduce lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are used to restore volume or “fill in” wrinkles as well as plump up the cheeks or lips whereas BOTOX® works by “freezing” the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to reduce their appearance and prevent them from worsening. Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers require repeat treatments to maintain results.

Our Scottsdale office offers cosmetic injectables and can help you determine which product will help you reach your ideal look as best as possible.

The Benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® is made of the bacteria botulinum toxin Type A and is a muscle relaxer. This injectable can treat more than aesthetic issues and is also used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), migraine headaches, muscle weakness and twitching. BOTOX® Cosmetic is best used for lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle activity such as frowning and squinting. These are called “dynamic wrinkles” that naturally occur as you age and are near impossible to avoid in the long term.

BOTOX® Cosmetic has been on the market for more than 20 years and is an effective way to reduce wrinkles and restore a more youthful look. One BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment lasts approximately 3-4 months.

The Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are often made of hyaluronic acid, collagen, hydroxylapatite or poly-L-lactic acid. They work to eliminate specific wrinkles such as those around the lips and the vertical lines around the nose by promoting the natural production of collagen and adding volume to sunken areas of the face. Some fillers can be used for lip enhancement or to improve facial scarring such as acne scars. Common dermal fillers include Juvederm, Radiesse, Sculptra and Voluma. Dermal fillers are great, non-surgical options for skin rejuvenation, which tend to last longer than BOTOX®. Some filler options last up to two years.
