Does breast implant shape make a difference in the final appearance of your breast augmentation procedure? Yes, but perhaps not as much as the skill of the plastic surgeon you choose to work with. According to a recent study published in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery®, the official online journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast implant shape may not play as large a role in final results as once thought.
For this study, 30 plastic surgeons and plastic surgery nurses were shown sets of before and after pictures and asked if the breast implants used were round or teardrop shaped. While the plastic surgeons themselves fared slightly better than the nurses, both groups proved unable to identify implant shape in every case, begging the question, “How much of a role does breast implant shape play in final breast enlargement results?” The answer? Some.
It is important to remember that the patients viewed in the study received their breast augmentations from board-certified and experienced plastic surgeons. Surgeons with training and certification in this specialty are better able to choose an implant shape that naturally complements surrounding anatomical features, making it more difficult to tell that augmentation has been performed at all. So did implant shape play a role in these results? Probably, but because the procedures were done well, implant shape allowed for optimal contours and became less obvious.
