Care and Maintenance of Breast Implants

SERVING SCOTTSDALE, PHOENIX, GILBERT, MESA, CHANDLER AND ARIZONA

breast-implantBreast augmentation, one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States, achieves a fuller and shapelier chest using breast implants. In fact, breast implants can be placed for numerous different reasons, such as correcting breast asymmetry, increasing breast size, creating a rounder appearance, and restoring lost volume, all of which can enhance a woman's self-confidence. After getting implants, it is important to know how to care for them with the proper maintenance to promote good healing and fantastic long-term outcomes.

What To Do After Breast Augmentation Surgery

After the implant surgery is complete, it is important to know these tips and tricks to help with the healing process and to ensure that you are about to maintain your high-quality results.

Recover and Rest

A great way to heal and ensure good results is to spend enough time resting. This means taking a few days to weeks off from work and putting exercise and other strenuous activities on hold to give your body time to recover and adjust. You’ll want to avoid any activity that involves jumping or running, as this can lead to your stitches tearing and interfering with the final look.

Moisturize and Massage

As dry skin can become tight and less resilient, it is important to moisturize your breasts to keep them soft, smooth, and elastic. Moisturizing your scars can also help lighten the marks. Our plastic surgeon will tell you when you can start applying topical treatments and will advise you on the best products to use. You can also incorporate some self-massage into this routine.

We advise patients to massage their breasts during the first six to eight weeks of recovery. It can be done in the shower and helps encourage the breast implants to settle into place.

Wear a Properly Fitted Bra

Making sure you have a properly fitted bra that gives your breasts the support they need is important, as this can help prevent sagging and keep your implants secure. After getting breast implants, the weight of your breasts will increase slightly, so it is important to plan for that as well. Breast augmentation patients should wear a special bra during the initial healing phase to help set them into the ideal position. You’ll want to make sure that your breasts are properly supported after healing too, especially when you’re able to return to high-impact exercise.

Check Your Silicone Implants with MRIs

Silicone implant ruptures are harder to detect than saline ruptures because the gel holds its shape. Fortunately, a silicone rupture can be detected with an MRI. The FDA recommendation is to get the first MRI 6 years after getting new implants and then repeat every 2-3 years. And for people who cannot get an MRI due to metal in their body or other disqualifying factors, then ultrasound imaging is a good alternative. We find that getting your first scan within the first ten years is usually sufficient, so that if you are one of the 7.7% of patients who experience a silicone rupture in that time frame, you can still take advantage of Allergan’s money warranty, which expires at 10 years. Keep in mind that the free implant replacement warranty is life long.
