If your eyes are causing you to look tired and older than you feel, then eyelid surgery may be right for you. Also called blepharoplasty, this restorative facial procedure reverses the effect that aging, gravity and genetics has upon the area surrounding your eyes.
Ready to find out if it is right for you? To arrange a consultation with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John Corey, please call our Scottsdale office at 480-767-7700.
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Blepharoplasty is a relatively quick procedure with limited downtime. The results have a dramatically rejuvenating effect on the face. Dr. Corey may recommend eyelid surgery for:
- Upper eyelid puffiness
- Sagging/drooping eyelids
- Dark circles beneath your eyes
- Under-eye bags
- Wrinkles around the eyes
The procedure has the effect of "opening up" the eye area, meaning the upper third of your face will look brighter and more inviting once excess skin and puffiness has been eliminated.
Please see more examples in our before-and-after gallery.
We encourage you to arrange a consult with Dr. Corey if you think you may be a candidate for this procedure. He has been practicing for decades, and he can determine whether blepharoplasty will benefit you after he examines your face and discusses your goals with you.
Generally, this procedure may be a beneficial match if:
- You want to look more refreshed, awake and youthful
- The drooping and hooded eyelids make you look angry or unapproachable
- You find it difficult to apply eye shadow and eyeliner because of puffy upper eyelids
- You have trouble seeing as well as you did previously because of sagging upper eyelids
- You are unhappy with the way your eyelids appear
The ideal upper eyelid contour is a defined curve. When skin and fat in the area becomes puffy and excessive, the contour may disappear. The eyelid crease may lose its natural definition. Eyelid surgery reverses these changes.
While distortion of the curve of the upper eyelid often occurs with age, it may also be something you were born with. Similarly, some people have a genetic predisposition to develop bags of fat beneath their eyes. These bags could develop as early as your 20s or 30s, which can make you look much older. As you can see in Dr. Corey's before-and-after gallery, these bags can be reduced and often eliminated with this procedure. In some cases of genetic eyelid bags with tight skin, the extra fat can be removed in a scarless procedure through the inside of the eyelid (transconjunctival approach)!
What to Expect from the Procedure
Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you will be able to return home shortly after surgery. You and Dr. Corey will discuss whether general or local anesthesia will be right for you. The procedure involves making small incisions through which fat and excess skin are re-shaped or removed. Underlying muscle may be tightened. Once healed, the incisions are imperceptible.
Some people choose to combine their eyelid surgery with other rejuvenating procedures for a more consistent, continuous result. Combinable treatments may include:
After surgery you should take a few days off to rest and relax around the house. The majority of swelling and bruising will be gone after 2-3 weeks. Most people return to work 10-14 days after blepharoplasty.
Results can last for many years, especially if you protect your skin from the sun and don't smoke. The procedure cannot stop the effect of aging as you grow older, but it essentially turns the clock back so that your eyes continue to look younger and more open than they would have otherwise.
