Breast Asymmetry (Uneven Breasts)
Serving Scottsdale, Phoenix, Gilbert, Mesa, Chandler and Tempe, Arizona
It is not uncommon for women to have some unevenness to their breasts. However, in certain cases this can be very dramatic. In some women this breast asymmetry can be as much as two or three cup sizes in difference. This can begin to present itself very early on in life and can be very traumatic for teenage girls as they begin to develop. In most of these cases there is also a difference in the shape of the breasts, and there can be varying degrees of droop as well. This can be one of the most challenging presentations in Corrective and Cosmetic Breast Surgery.
How is breast asymmetry (uneven breasts) surgically corrected?
There are many variations in the surgical correction of asymmetric breasts, depending on the patient’s specific presentation. In some rare cases, just the addition of a silicone or saline breast implant may help the situation. However most of the time, this is not enough. Correction of breast droop (or ptosis) may be involved and this may be different from side to side. Dr. Corey feels that in many moderate to severe cases, the ability to obtain more balanced breasts cannot be achieved using different size implants alone. A patient may need a full breast lift (or mastopexy) on one side and a mini (peri-areolar or “donut” lift) on the other. In most cases, Dr. Corey’s approach with his patients is to reduce and lift the larger breast to more resemble the shape and size of the smaller breast, and then use similar size breast implants, either silicone or saline, to achieve more balance and proportion for the woman’s body type. Again, there may be multiple variations on this depending on the patient’s individual presentation and goals. In cases of adolescents, there may be further surgery required as the patient continues to mature. While correction is available, it should be noted that even after surgery, the breasts most likely will NOT look identical. They may be much improved but there will always be differences from side to side. A frank discussion should be had as well with Scottsdale breast surgeon, Dr. Corey that breast feeding may not be possible after a lift, and in younger patients this may be a concern.
So would this be teenage girls getting Breast Implants that I have heard so much about?
Not at all. This is not the case of a young girl getting breast implants for her sixteenth birthday! This would be reserved for severe cases of asymmetry, uneven breasts or breast deformity. These young girls tell Dr. Corey of the horribly embarrassing situations they have encountered in Middle and High School and the personal grief of just shopping for a bra or swimsuit.
What is recovery like?
The recovery is much like it is for the other types of breast surgery such as breast augmentation or breast lift (Mastopexy). Most breast asymmetry patients are up and around in 3-5 days, with no bouncing type of exercise for two weeks.
I, or my daughter, might be suffering from breast asymmetry (uneven breasts). What should I do next?
If one of your breasts are uneven or look totally different from the other and you have trouble finding proper bras or fitting in clothing because of this problem, you may be a candidate for breast asymmetry surgery. Call Dr. Corey’s office in Scottsdale today to make a consultation appointment! At his Scottsdale office, Dr. Corey offers three types of breast surgery consultations: an individual consultation which costs $75, a group consultation (10 to 20 people) which is free, or if you live out of the area, an online consultation which is also free. Before you meet with Dr. Corey, make sure to write down all questions or concerns you have and bring them up with your surgeon. Of all the procedures that Dr. Corey performs, this seems to be one of the most life changing operations.
